Classification of Courses – Academic Year 2025 – 2026
Students who, under the terms and conditions established in the Subsidiary Legislation 605.06 and the guidelines established by the Students’ Maintenance Grants’ Board, are following a full-time course at MQF Level 4, 5, 6 or 7, may qualify for the following award according to the classification of their course.
Courses are classified as:
- General
- Prescribed
- High Priority
- General Courses (including vocational/professional courses)
Students who are following General degree courses are normally entitled to the following:
(i) A fixed rate of €115.88 every four weeks’ covering period between 1st of October and the 30th June. Payable periods are between December 2025 and August 2026.
(ii) A sum of €565.87 per academic year to partly cover expenses related to educational material and equipment.
(iii) A one-time grant of €465.87 payable in the first year of the undergraduate course.
- Prescribed Degree Courses (including vocational/professional courses)
Students who are following a prescribed full-time undergraduate degree course (MQF Levels 4, 6 or 7) shall qualify for the following awards:
(i) A fixed rate of €196.06 every four weeks’ payable between the 1st of October and the 30th of June; payable periods are between December and August.
(ii) A sum of €798.81 per academic year to partly cover expenses related to educational material and equipment
(iii) A one-time grant of €698.81 payable in the first year of the undergraduate course.

- High-Priority Courses
Students who, under the terms and conditions established in these Regulations are granted a monetary grant and are following a full-time undergraduate degree course defined as National High Priority by SMGB, qualify for the following award for the duration of their course of studies.
(i) A fixed rate of €384.28 every four weeks payable between the 1st October and the 30th of June. Payable periods are between December 2025 and August 2026.
(ii) A sum of €798.81 per academic year to partly cover expenses related to educational material and equipment.
(iii) A one-time grant of €698.81 payable in the first year of the undergraduate course.

Important Notes:
- Courses whose classification has been revised, and whose classification has been elevated from General to Prescribed or from Prescribed to High Priority this academic year, shall not be entitled for the backdated difference in Students’ Maintenance Grants’ rates for payments already received.
- Courses listed above, who undergo changes in course structure and/or route, will have their classification re-discussed by the Students’ Maintenance Grants’ Board. The Board the right to revise the list of Course Classification.
- Students studying in a private institution in Malta / foreign institution and who are applying under the MGUS, and whose course titles do not match exactly with the course titles shown above as being offered in local institutions, will have their course classification decided upon by the Students’ Maintenance Grants’ Board in consultation with the Hon. Minister for Education and Sport. In the case of Diplomas (set at MQF Level 5) leading to one of the abovementioned Degrees, this continuation must be expressly stipulated in the Unconditional Letter of Acceptance.
