Stipends and Grants are provided by the Government of Malta to students attending approved Post-Secondary, Vocational, and Tertiary Educational Institutions. These are regulated by Subsidiary Legislation 605.06, which also outlines applicant eligibility.
Students are encouraged to apply online through this link: https://stipendsandgrants.gov.mt using their e-ID and password to confirm between 29th September and 31st December 2025 in order to receive Stipends and Grants from the beginning of the academic year. Students applying after 31st December 2025 will be considered for stipends and grants from the date of submission (if found eligible).

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for Stipends and Grants, students must:
- Be Maltese citizens, or have at least one parent who is a Maltese citizen;
- Or be nationals of an EU/EEA state or family members thereof, with permanent residence in Malta;
- Or be EU/EEA nationals exercising Treaty rights in Malta (as workers, self-employed, etc.);
- Or be third-country nationals granted refugee or long-term residence status.
Additional criteria include:
- Residing in Malta for at least 5 years immediately prior to the start of the course.
Note: Time spent abroad for medical or other approved reasons may be exempt from this requirement. - Completion of compulsory education.
- Regular attendance and satisfactory academic progress.
- Not being in full-time employment.
- Part-time employment not exceeding 30 hours per week is permitted.
- Progression in study level, based on the Malta Qualifications Framework (MQF).
How to Apply
The online application includes the following steps:
Page 1: Personal Details
- Verify that all personal information is correct.
- Enter your IBAN (31 alphanumeric characters).
Page 2: Course & History
- Answer all questions carefully.
- Enter your course details.
- Add at least one item in the Education/Employment History section.
Page 3: Supplementary Allowance
- Select “Yes” only if facing proven hardship or humanitarian situations.
- Choose a reason for applying for the Supplementary Allowance.
Page 4: Document Uploads
- Upload the requested documents, including:
- Recent Employment History
- School-Leaving Certificate & Profiling + the Certificate Diploma (all pages)
- If applying for the Supplementary Allowance:
- Parents’ Employment History
- FS3 forms
- Social Security benefit statements
- Profit and loss declarations (if applicable)
Final Step
- Click “Submit” once the application is complete.
- The application process typically takes up to 10 minutes, assuming all documents are pre-scanned and the IBAN is known.
Note: Applications may be amended until 30th June 2026.
No further processing will occur after this date.
Entitlements
Eligible students may receive:
- One-Time Grant (depending on course)
- Initial Grant
- Stipends
- Single Parent Grant
- Top-Up Stipend
- Supplementary Stipend and grant (if applicable)
What you’ll get in terms of Stipends and Grants
Stipends and Grants are awarded to students according to the MQF Level and classification of the course that the students are reading for as per table below:

The below pay dates are only applicable for students pursuing their studies also during the 3rd Semester and for Students following course with Apprenticeship programmes during which periods the later will only be entitled to receive their Top Up Stipends.

Payment of Stipends and Grants
All Stipends and Grants are credited directly to the bank account that the students insert in their online application, after the Students’ Maintenance Grants’ Unit receives confirmation from the respective Educational Institutions’ regarding commencement of course, and after students CONFIRM their online application.
It is imperative that students enter their personal active and correct IBAN account number in their online application.
No alerts are sent to students when stipends and grants are credited to students. Such service may be sought from their local bank services provider.
