Work Phases and Flexibility

Students are required to select an area of study of interest. Due to high demand, students will be assigned to one (1) phase consisting of four (4) weeks.

Students cannot work more than 80 hours. The 80 hours include the vacation leave and sick leave entitlements. Subsequently, extra hours or hours not worked will not be remunerated.

However, students may apply for:

  • Phase 1 only, or
  • Phase 2 only, or
  • Both Phases (by submitting a separate application for each phase)

Applying for both phases increases flexibility and the chances of placement.

The number of available placements depend on applications received from employers within the Public Service/Public Sector.

Once the vetting process is complete, eligible students will be required to sit for an online test. A calendar invite with the date and time for the test will be sent accordingly.

Placement will depend on:

  • Employers’ requests
  • Applicants’ ranking in the online test

As this is a work exposure scheme, SMGU is not obliged to place students in their chosen area of study.
